Image: Dr. Antonia WallbraunThe Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg and the Oldenburg University Society (UGO) celebrated the official opening of the new academic year with a festive ceremony in the university’s Audimax. Around 500 guests from academia, politics, business, and culture attended the traditional “Auftakt” event. The keynote speech was delivered by Prof. Manuel Hartung, Chairman of the ZEIT STIFTUNG BUCERIUS, who spoke on the role of universities in defending democratic freedoms.
University President Prof. Dr. Ralph Bruder and UGO Chair Wiebke Schneidewind opened the event by highlighting the university’s development, its social responsibility, and its achievements in the Excellence Strategy. Lower Saxony’s Science Minister Falko Mohrs and Oldenburg’s Lord Mayor Jürgen Krogmann both praised the university’s outstanding research performance and its strong cooperation with the city.
A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the UGO Awards for outstanding academic achievements. Psychologist Prof. Dr. Mandy Roheger and art educator Prof. Dr. Michaela Kaiser received the Prize for Excellent Research, each worth 5,000 euros. The UGO Doctoral Prize (2,000 euros) was awarded to Dr. Antonia Wallbraun from the Chemistry Education group (AG Timm Wilke) for her outstanding dissertation. The Prize for Outstanding Doctoral Supervision (2,000 euros) went to biologist Dr. Maren Striebel.
Musical performances by students of the Institute of Music and excerpts from Astor Piazzolla’s María de Buenos Aires created a festive atmosphere. The evening was moderated by university alumnus Nils Prior.
