The project will develop macrophage-targeting nanoparticles containing phagolysosome-specific macromolecular prodrugs. Macromolecular prodrugs bearing novel antibacterial and antifungal compounds will be synthesized and formulated to particles together with mannose-functionalized polymers. It will be studied if these nanoparticles are suitable to transport antibiotics across two cell membranes and release them at specific sites. This may open entirely novel therapeutic approaches, including the development of novel antibiotics.
